Fifth Linguistics Institute January 2010
The Fifth Columbia School Institute for the Study of Form, Meaning, and Human Behavior in Language was held January 18-21, 2010, at The City College of New York, hosted by the School of Education.
Co-organizers were Alan Huffman and Joseph Davis. Radmila Gorup, Wallis Reid, Betsy Rodriguez-Bachiller, and Nancy Stern also served as faculty. Participants worked in-depth with authentic texts on several grammatical systems of English and investigated problems in other languages as well. Columbia School scholars gave presentations on topics from English, Latin, Mandarin, and Serbo-Croatian. Special attention was given to English grammar and its pedagogy.

A total of seventeen participants took part. The participants hailed from The City College, The CUNY Graduate Center, Rutgers University, Kean University, Columbia University, Hofstra University, and the private sector.
The Society's five Institutes have all had different formats, but the purpose has remained essentially unchanged: to present CS work and ideas to relative newcomers who express an interest in learning more than might be available in classes taught by CS scholars who are scattered geographically and by institutional affiliation. |
